Address by the Honourable Dato’ Seri Syed Hamid Albar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia at the Round Table on “50 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Malaysia and the Netherlands: Lessons Learnt” at Treaty Room, Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR), Kuala Lumpur, 21 February 2008
Malaysians are still in the midst of celebrating our 50th Anniversary of Independence. I can confidently say that we at Wisma Putra have worked very hard the last 50 years to promote and defend Malaysia’s national interests and ensure success in the conduct of our foreign policy. There are many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. To meet them, we should also look at our past, appreciate it and benefit from the lessons learnt as we move ahead to the future.

I would like to welcome everyone present here on the occasion of the cheque presentation ceremony from the Government of Malaysia to the Government of Bangladesh for victims of natural disaster. As we all know, Bangladesh had recently suffered from devastating cyclones and other calamities such as floods and tornadoes. The calamities which have left a trail of devastation across the country have affected the lives of over 10 million people in Bangladesh. As a country that had had its own fair share of natural disaster, Malaysia empathizes with the problem faced by the Government and people of Bangladesh. Understanding, the difficulties faced and as a sign of solidarity and friendship, the Government of Malaysia has decided to contribute USD 270,000 to the victims of the disaster in Bangladesh. We sincerely hope that this modest contribution could help lessen the burden faced by the victims and could assist them during the recovery process.

The annual bazaar, first held in 1989, by the dedicated Delhi Commonwealth Women's Association, which had been instrumental in charity works, organised a craft exhibition at the embassy's premise Saturday. About 100 participants, both Malaysians and Indians, took part in the one-day fund raising campaign that attracted diplomats, the international community and Delhi residents. "Proceeds from the rental of these stalls will be used to run hospitals, schools, nurseries and help the under privileged. The High Commission does not charge any money for the premise, this is one way to help the needy," Malaysian High Commissioner to India Datuk Tan Seng Sung told Bernama. The association formed in 1952 to enhance cultural exchange has added social services as its primary annual progamme and raised funds to meet various expenditures including managing its medical centre and another centre for children with special needs. Kumud Kohli, chairperson of this year's craft bazaar, said that the event had expanded in size every year, as more people were keen to assist charity organisations. "We have been organising this bazaar for the last 20 years and the revenue generated is mostly used to finance our medical centre in Delhi. Our team of doctors provide free medical treatment for the poor. "More people are aware of our charity work and continue to attend our bazaar," she added. The association, with about 500 members, plans to organise a large-scale exhibition later this year for the same purpose. |
| Malaysia-Netherlands Can Intensify Cooperation, Says Syed Hamid 22-02-2008 ~ BERNAMA | | KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar says that although relations between Malaysia and the Netherlands are on a firm foundation, there are prospects to further strengthen and reinvigorate it. In this context, he encouraged companies and institutions to intensify cooperation in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, bio-technology and information technology. Singling out agriculture, Syed Hamid said that cooperation in this sector was clearly an area where Malaysia and the Netherlands, the worlds second largest exporter of agricultural products and food, could further collaborate. He said this in his address at the Round Table on "50 Years of Diplomatic Relations Between Malaysia and the Netherlands: Lessons Learnt" here today. His speech was read by the ministry's secretary general Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa. The event was organised by the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR). Syed Hamid also noted that Kuala Lumpur-Amsterdam ties were still mainly driven by economics, trade and investment cooperation. From 2002 to 2006, the Netherlands was the fifth largest source of foreign investments in Malaysia with total investments of RM6 billion in 76 approved projects. The Netherlands is one of Malaysia's important traditional trading partners. Since 2000, bilateral trade has increased almost 40 per cent from RM17.81 billion in 2000 to RM24.79 billion in 2006 and this had resulted in the Netherlands being Malaysia's second largest trading partner among the European Union (EU) member states. Touching on education, the minister noted that currently there was only a small number of Malaysian students studying in the Netherlands. "We hope that more places could be provided for Malaysian students in science and technical fields such as information and communication technology and agriculture biotechnology," he said. Elaborating on bilateral relations Syed Hamid said that 50 years ago, the Netherlands was among the first few European countries that established diplomatic ties with the newly independent Malaya. He said that despite the geographical distance, Malaysia and the Netherlands shared many similarities like constitutional monarchies with a strong parliamentary system of government. Both countries were also among the worlds leading trading nations despite being relatively small countries, he added. "It is worthy to note that relations with the Netherlands, which began through historical linkages had contributed significantly towards what Malaysia has achieved till present," he said. |
